2.4 Million Toys Recalled Due to Choking and Intestinal Hazards From Magnets

MEGA Brands America Inc., in conjunction with the CPSC, is recalling around 2.4 million toys because small magnets can fall out of the toys, which poses a choking hazard to infants and young children.

The company is recalling around .1 million Magtastik and Magnetix Jr. preschool toys and 1.3 million MagnaMan magnetic action figures. The magnets in the toys can detach and can be swallowed by young children. If more than one magnet is swallowed, the magnets can attract each other and cause intestinal perforations or blockages, which can be fatal.

MEGA Brands and CPSC have received 19 reports of magnets coming loose in the Magtastik toys, which included one incident of a 3-year-old boy having medical treatment to remove a magnet from his nasal cavity and one report of an 18-month-old boy with a magnet in his mouth, which was not swallowed. Also, there have been 25 reports of magnets coming loose from the MagnaMan figures but there have been no injuries.

The Magtastik and Magnetix Jr. Pre-school Magnetic Toys include small flexible parts embedded with magnets that allow the parts to connect to large, colored metal balls. The recalled MagnaMan magnetic toys are figures that have body parts that attach with magnets. They come in either a "Futuristic Warrior" or "Ancient Warrior" theme. Each figure comes with three accessories.

For a list of the recalled Magtastik and Magnetix Jr. Pre-School Magnetic Toys modelsclick here.
For a list of the recalled MagnaMan Magnetic Action Figures models click here.

The toys were sold between January 2005 and December 2007 at toy stores throughout the nation, including Wal-Mart, Target, Toys R' Us and Kmart.

Even though there have not been any injuries, there have been 44 complaints over the past two years about the loose magnets. These complaints prompted the recall.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Jenny Albano

FDA Recalls Toothpaste Made in China

Testing has revealed that some toothpaste made in China contains the harmful ingredient diethylene glycol. The FDA has issued a product recall for all toothpaste made in China. Diethylene glycol is found in anti-freeze and can cause kidney and liver damage.

The agency is warning consumers to avoid using tubes of toothpaste labeled as made in China and, through an import alert, is stopping all suspect toothpaste from entering the United States. The FDA continues to investigate this problem and will take further action, as appropriate, to address this important public safety issue.

The recall affects the brands made by several different companies as well as a counterfeit version of Colgate. If you have a toothpaste that is marked "Made in China" it is recommended that you stop using it and return it for a refund.

For more information on this subject, please refer to our section on Defective and Dangerous Products.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Shannon Weidemann

Rat Poison in Pet Food Causing Deaths

It is unknown how it got there, but the recalled pet food has tested positive for rat poison. The recall of 60 million cans and foil pouches of cat and dog food is one of the largest recalls of pet food. The pet food has been linked to kidney failure in cats and dogs.

The deaths led to a recall of 60 million cans and pouches of pet food produced by Menu Foods and sold throughout North America under 95 brand names. There have been several reports of kidney failure in pets that ate the recalled brands, and the company has confirmed the deaths of 15 cats and one dog.

Menu Foods last week recalled "cuts and gravy" style dog and cat food. The recall sparked concern among pet owners across North America. It includes food sold under store brands carried by Wal-Mart, Kroger, Safeway and other large retailers, as well as private labels such as Iams, Nutro and Eukanuba.

A complete list of the recalled food can be found at www.menufoods.com/recall. If your pet has eaten the recalled food and is going through kidney failure or death and you would like to speak with an attorney, please use the contact form on the right.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Shannon Weidemann
